Very few people will know, if anyone, exactly what is inside the factory and where.
It's just one of these things and if the houses are to go ahead we will have to trust the judgement of the so called experts in land testing.
They're testing the land and water as it is just now, if they do happen to find some potentialy dangerous chemicals what happens if once the ground is disturbed or dug for whatever reason and all of a sudden there is a problem when the earth is moved to another part if the site ?
It's something that simple that could cause major problems.

I was talking to someone last night who said the knew some of the people who were taking the core samples. He said som of the staff walked off the site after seeing what they brough up in the samples. They brought up the samples and looked at what was in them then said I'm not moving that and walked off the site.

Just another rumour to add to the pile.

This report was in relation to a Radioactive substances act . The report -came from differentiaion exercise report on the ROF grounds as commisioned by the counil. Anyway, the request under FoI act was refused on the grounds that "its disclosure would or would be likely to prejudice substantially national security" .

Just as a side note, when council representives made the same request for the same information, they too were refused on the grounds that "its disclosure would or would be likely to prejudice substantially national security".

Makes you think, doesnt it...

I could only assume that the radioactive substances were sources used to X-ray the shells to ensure they were filled correctly, there were a number of X-ray sites across the ROF as a whole.

As for the "national security" bit, I'd assume (probably incorrectly) that all and any military operations , whether military, ordnance, manufacture or operational would come under the official secrets act and would not be disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act?

I feel for the drillers on site, ground investigation always has an element of the unknown, but the site will be classed as a Red site on a traffic light system, therefore all they require to work safely should have been taken into consideration and provided before they stepped foot on site. They would be given appropriate personal protective equipment  (PPE), and decontamination units / washers. So theoretically they should not have been at nay harm. Some of the stuff that comes out of the ground during site investigations is quite scary, but it can safely be decontaminated or remediated via encapsulation.

Working on contaminated sites is always risky, but the public view is generally biased by buzz words like radioactive, contaminated and risk - which generally install panic and fear.
Having worked on several contaminated site, some with more direct risks than this one I'd be certain to make sure I did a damn good job of the remediation, as I'd be at greatest risk on site at the start of the works than the end users would be at the end. It'd be a really interesting site to work on that's for sure.

Just been listening to an interesting program on BBC Radio 4 "Costing the Earth: The big clean up". It was talking about redeveloping brownfield sites, the pros and cons and catastrophes. It also features the ROF and the planned redevelopment in Bishopton.

Really quite an interesting listen, I think it will be on Iplayer if anyone is interested.
